Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can spread from one person to another through unprotected sex or close genital contact.
Some STIs don’t show any symptoms. If they are not treated, they can sometimes cause more serious health problems in the future. The good news is that most STIs can be treated and cured when they are found early.
STI symptoms can include:
- unusual discharge from the penis or vagina, sometimes with an unpleasant smell
- itching
- rashes
- lumps or blisters around the genitals or anus
- pain when you pee
- pain or bleeding after sex
- pain in the testicles or lower tummy
If you have any of the symptoms above, please visit one of our clinics for a test.
You can attend our clinic with or without symptoms.
After chatting to you, we will tell you which tests you need. We will explain what will happen and why the tests are important. If you are unsure about anything, please ask, we are happy to explain.
The tests may include:
- a urine (pee) sample
- a blood sample
- swabs from the urethra (the tube where pee comes out)
- an examination of your genitals
- for women, swabs from the vagina, which you can usually take yourself
To test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, we usually only need a urine sample or a self taken vaginal swab.
To test for HIV and syphilis, we need a blood sample.
Tests for herpes are not usually done unless you have sores on your genitals or anus. If you do, a swab will be taken from a sore. This might feel uncomfortable for a moment, but it is quick.
It’s still important to have regular tests, especially if you are having sex with someone new or you are in a new relationship.
