Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that that weakens your immune system and increases your risk of serious illness. HIV is most commonly passed on through vaginal or anal sex without using a condom.

The only way to know if you have HIV is to have an HIV test - many people do not get symptoms for years.

It is important to get tested if you:

  • think you may have HIV
  • have had sex without a condom with someone who has HIV

The earlier HIV is found, the sooner treatment can start. Treatment can help people living with HIV live long and healthy lives.

Our team is here to support you. Contact us for an appointment or if you would like to speak to someone.

No symptoms? You can order a test to your home here - Free STI home testing kit

If you test positive for HIV, we will refer you to the HIV service in Newcastle University Trust Hospitals (NuTH) where you will be supported through regular check-ups.

PEP

PEP stands for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. This means it is taken after sex.

It is a short course of medicine that can help stop HIV after you may have been exposed.

You may need PEP if you have had unprotected sex, like sex without a condom.

If you think you need PEP, please act quickly. PEP works best when it is started within 72 hours (3 days) of the possible exposure.

Please contact our team as soon as you can for help and support.

PrEP

PrEP stands for Pre-exposure prophylaxisis. Pre-exposure means before exposure and prophylaxis means to prevent infection.

PrEP is free a free pill you can take before sex. It reduces the risk of HIV being passed on from one person to another during sex. It can be taken if you are HIV negative but at higher risk of getting HIV.

You may be able to get PrEP if you:

  • change partners often
  • have sex with someone who may be at higher risk of HIV
  • have a partner who is HIV positive and detectable

If you feel you may be at higher risk of HIV through sex and want to talk about using PrEP, contact us and speak to our friendly team.
